I totally support jamie carragher on retiring from the england squad, even saying retiring is stretching it a bit as he was never seen as first choice by this or previous england managers, being a bench warmer tournament after tournament takes it's toll, just like if carson was to leave liverpool, he's been here 2 or 3 seasons but we would not miss him if he left and i would not blame him if he did, jamie was obviously too nice to complain at the time and cause some kind of disruption to the squad, anyone who criticise gerrard is obviously a numbskull, as the important england games are next month which he should be 100% fit for (they actually mean something) as points are at stake, apparently he may not be playing against sunderland because of the injury and healing time, if not, hopefully the team can show that we can play and win without him now and again.

I disagree with any player who "retires" from international competition. It should be a unique honour to put on your country's uniform, even if you sit on the bench. The vast, vast majority of players never get such a chance. In Canada, our hockey players rarely, very rarely, turn down a chance to play and represent their country. But I notice soccer players do it a lot. Zidane retired for a few years. Shearer retired before his time. And the list goes on. I have a great deal of respect for players like Beckham or David James who keep working, hoping they'll get the call again. They understand what a true honour it is to play for your country. Sooner or later, Father Time will take away your chance forever. If you get the chance, take it and never "retire" until you have to.

Players retire from international football for many reasons, some even make up lame excuses as to why, but in carragher's case (honest right down to his finger bone), he got tired of being a bench warmer, he's played in 2 champs league finals and he's waiting for players with half his experience and lacking some of his defensive abilities to get injured and then he maybe asked to play out of position, domestically he's won everything apart from prem title, which hopefully will arrive sometime in may 2008, he's had high praise from past and present football greats, so if jaime says he's had enough of that shoddy treatment, any real liverpool fan would take it to be true and fully understand, he's should not go to the next big tournament hoping he may get 2 ten minute substitution appearances and think he is lucky, he's already been places some others may never see, which includes the england captain.
