Not many people had heard of Alvaro Arbeloa when he signed for Liverpool, and he was initially signed as cover for Steve Finnan at right back, but has sinced proven his versatility in a Red shirt.
Arbeloa played left back against Barcelona in the Champions League, and kept the likes of Messi and Ronaldinho at bay, and has since put in brilliant performances at left back against the likes of Chelsea, proving he can fit in at left back when needed.
Rafael Benitez praised Arbeloa a few weeks ago, saying "Arbeloa has done a good job for us so far, He is a young, fit boy and we know he is only going to get better in the future.
"He wasn't used to the left back position at all but he has come in and performed very well. When you look how well he did on his debut for us up against Lionel Messi in Barcelona then you can see he is a player with ability.
"His best positions are in the centre or on the right, so it shows his quality that he can come into a new team and adapt in a different role.
With Daniel Agger injured for up to 6 weeks, and Fabio Aurelio and John Arne Riise back from injury, Rafa may choose Arbeloa in the centre alongside Carragher, if he does not select Hyypia.
Alvaro has shown he can play wherever needed, and always gives 110% when called upon.
