Liverpool are out of Europe after losing 3-2 after Extra time to Chelsea.
Liverpool went a goal down through Drogba who scored after Kalou's shot was saved by Reina. Fernando Torres pulled a goal back after Benayoun took on the Chelsea defence before sending a ball through to Torres who slotted past Cech.
It went to extra time, where Hyypia fouled Ballack in the area to give away a Penalty, then Drogba scored again after Riise failed to track Anelka properly; rather than playing to the whistle he opted to claim offside against Anelka, who squared for Drogba to make it 3-1.
Ryan Babel got a goal back from 40 yards, when he blasted a shot at Cech who could not hold on it to it, but it was too little too late.
There is not a team in Europe with a “Top class 11″.
Utd – Van der Sar, Evra, Brown, Vidic, Ferdinand. Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves. Tevez, Ronaldo, Rooney.
Brown, Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves. Hardly top class, Scholes isn’t half the player he used to be. I wouldn’t call Ferdinand Top class either, without Vidic he’s nothing. Van der Sar has had better days too.
Chelsea – Cech, Terry, Carvalho, Cole, Belletti. Essien, Ballack, Lampard. Kalou, J.Cole, Drogba.
Lampard is over rated and not needed when Ballacks around. Cole is a child. Terry needs Carvalho to hold his hand, to stop him handling the ball and pushing lads. Kalou is a nothing player. J.Cole plays good for half a season, belongs at West Ham. Belletti was finished at Barca.
So in a winning team you need 5 or 6 class players in the right positions. We have, Reina, Carra, Agger, Gerrard, Mashe and Torres. We just need to improve at left back and get better attacking options especially on the right. Let some of the young lads replace the likes of Voronin, Crouch, Pennant, Riise. Insua looks like a decent left back. Buy big to replace Kuyt. Then we can challenge for the number one spot. But money rules over all and we can’t compete with Utd and Chelsea in that respect. Every player wants to sign for Chelsea for the money, they don’t want to play football. S.Wright-Phillips, Sidwell, Malouda, Schevchenko, Anelka to name but a few are wasted at that club and went there for the cash.
Top class Phil doesn’t equate into world class. Sami Hyypia has been a top class player for Liverpool for many years in my eyes. But I doubt anyone would call him world class.
Top class means a good player who knows his position well and adds something to the team. A player you can rely on with a certain amount of quality, even if he’s not brilliant.
As far as Im concerned only Wes Brown isn’t a top class player in ManUre’s first 11.
Only Beletti or Ferrera aren’t top class in the Chelsea team, and that’s why they now play Essien right back.
Liverpool had Arbeloa, Riise, Kuyt and Benayoun who aren’t top class players against Chelsea. And Arbeloa and Riise were at fault for two of the goals.
Gareth Barry for example is top class, but not world class. We need these type of players at full back and on the wings.

Riise was crap again tonight. First he gave away an own goal last week, then he didnt chase Drogba down for the first goal, then tried to claim offside on Anelka rather than playing to the whistle.
I think he’s gone Tony in the summer. He’s gone to shite and even at his best he was still too fond of hoofing the ball. Pity Aurelio got injured as he was finally showing his ability.
I think Rafa annoying Drogba was the biggest fuck up because after all the games he played against us he never got two goals in a game. Yet tonight he was possessed.
Our spine is fine but the full backs and wingers we need better players with quality. And Gerrard needs a position in these games where he is more involved. A free role leaves him on the periphery of the games when he’s our best player.
Kuyt, Benayoun (despite his great moment) Riise and Arbeloa were the weak links in the first 11 that we need to improve on in the summer.

i just think luck wasn’t on our side tonight. the lads gave it a good go. we lost concentration for 10mins in extra-time and it was over. we still had a chance at the end. sami should have had a pen(strange zat ze ref put ze whistle in his mouth and yet didnt blow it)and riise was unlucky last week(not zat he’s a great player)…..overall i thought we were the better side but didnt quite get the luck….. it happens sometimes……its a really bitter pill to swallow thats for sure….

i was so sad last night,becoz i believe all our players’ effort in the season deserve to enter the final. They worth it!!They did so well against inter milan, arsenal, as well as chelsea at the first leg~they just accidentally dropped last night, and this was enough to make them out of the champions league…
but life goes on, for all of the fans and players and the manager.let us place our hope onto next season, and keep supporting them in winning glory!!we know u guys can do well in the next season~

I was proud of our performance last night if the truth was known we lost the tie because of Riise mistake in the first leg, the difference between going to the bridge 1-0 up and 1-1 was huge.
Now we need to reorganise the side, we need to buy top quality players and top quality only.
We also need to clear out all of the not good enoughs.
Out must go – Kewell, Riise, Pennant, Voronin, Alonso, Crouch (if only because Rafa doesnt give him a chance),Kuyt, Carson, and Guthrie .
We then need to bring in two top quality full backs, a top class winger, and two top quality strikers.
We are still a long way away from having a premiership winning team.
But us fans deserve a premiership challenging side, we cannot keep being out of the race by Christmas, frankly that is unacceptable. Rafa needs to buy wisely, better than ever before, that means getting the checkbook out and buying big money top quality signings, no more squad players and players for the future.
Wether he can do this is the $64,000 question. Gareth Barry would make a good first signing, but players like Valencia of Wigan worry me (if his so good why is he playing for Wigan ?)Valencia is hardly World class. Benitez needs to buy top class / world class players not not good enoughs.
well our semi final luck has finnaly ran out against chelsea.
all the lads put up a good and brave performance, but i think the reason that we lost the semi was not because of last night but from the 1st leg at anfield when stevie g played the long corner in the 93rd minute instead of playing the short ball and keeping possession in the chelsea end.
i know in hindsight we all say these things but while at work at listening to it on the radio i was in disbelief at why gerrard chose to hoof it into the penalty box which then in turn led to the equalising goal.
hard luck lads and lets hope for a better run next run next season.
now zer r even some saying zat we lost bkoz of wat rafa said about drogba.wat rubbish!!The fact is that Liverpool were 20 minutes or so from penalties, this shows the closeness of the contest and over the two legs either team would have deserved their place in the final, with my biased eyes believing that, on pure football, Liverpool were probably, ever so slightly, the better team. The fact is that this tie was decided not by tactical genius of either manager, but by individual mistakes made by Risse and Hyypia.
To blame Rafa’s management for Liverpools’ loss is wide of the mark, clearly not warranted, and is a smack of disrespect.
The Drogba thing has been blown out of proportion due to his goals and the fact Chelsea won. If you are looking for reasons for Liverpool’s defeat, look no further than the normally composed and reliable Hyypia, who had a stinker last night from the moment he walked onto the pitch. I think Skrtel going off was crucial for us especially as he appeared to have the ability to contain the Chelsea forwards a lot better given his presence and pace.I’ve no complaints about the result – the result was always going to depend on individual errors. Hyypia made 2 (the penalty and allowing Kalou to skip onto his better foot) and Carragher played Anelka onside in the build up to Drogba’s 2nd. Chelsea made mistakes too, but they were in less dangerous areas, and when they WERE in dangerous areas, Liverpool didn’t make the most of it.
PS Drogba’s celebration after his goal showed that he does not have an ounce of dignity or grace, and highlights yet again why i hate him with such frightening intensity! The sooner he leaves the better for everyone!
i agree wit u imteaz…injury to skrtel proved to be a crucial point in the game.. hyypia didn have the best of games.. skrtel is faster than hyypia and more fit..and MAYBE he wudve done better on the challenge on ballack that led to the penalty…its all a game of ifs n buts.. but most crucially it ate up one substitution…
we cud ve easily used that substitution to put crouch on.. i was quite mad when pennant got on..it didn make sense.. babel shudve come on insted of benayoun and then crouch for torres…pennant didn do anythin for the time he came on…he is not player who can play on the european stage..
anyways it was a fantastic match nonetheless…my heads still buzzzin…

Kev j there’s a big rumour going around that we are in for David Villa of Valencia,Barry from Villa with Carson being used as bait, plus Mancini from Italy. Three pretty good International players, Villa has experience of playing alongside Torres for Spain, Barry has looked good playing alongside Gerrard and Mancini is talking of buying out his contract which means he would only cost 4m but good wages, if we offload Kewell who’s on 60,000 then we could offer that to Mancini, we were quoted 15m for him last year.

Knowin tat Rafa ain’t gona spend big, we shud check out Arshavin, sort of a left sided player for Zenit St Peterberg. Anyone who saw him take apart Bayer Leverkeusen in the last round of the UEFA will know how good he is. Also played well when they tore Bayern apart. Would be a cracking signing. Anyone know if he’s already going elsewhere? I know there’s loads of interest in him. If he’s not sorted, get going, Rafa.

Julez Just because Ramsey is 17 doesnt mean he has to go into the reserves, many a great player has played in the premier at a young age, Micheal Owen for one, Fabragas, Walcott, Rooney, if you good enough your old enough.
Ramsey would in my opinion be a great signing at 5m and would sort out our problem left back position for years to come.As I said he is a Liverpool fan so would jump at the chance of signing for us.
According to papers today Peter Crouch wants showdown talks with Benitez.
Looking at his goalscoring recold both for Liverpool and England he has a point . His goalscoring recold is pretty good.
I am not convinced that selling Crouch is a good idea, selling both Kuyt and Voronin I would 100% agree with – both are useless in front of goal, Crouch on the other hand is a good player and I reckon he will turn out to be a twenty goals a year striker if he leaves the club.
Benitez has treated him shabbily
and I wouldnt blame him for one minute if he were to leave. If we do sell we should be looking for 12m at least not the 7-8m being quoted in the papers. Goalscorers are hard to come by and a replacement will cost big bickies.

I’d sell him because he’s worth up to 10 million and considering it’s obvious he’ll never be a regular under Benitez then he is worth selling and buying a top class forward who will guarantee Kuyt stays on the bench. I am pulling my hair out why we don’t get Owen for £6-7 million when he has only as year left on his contract.
These are the poor decisions which explain why we can’t challenge for the league. We don’t buy the right players at the right times when we can afford them.
Crouch is a sub for Liverpool and he won’t accept that. Especially not seeing an inferior player like Dirk Kuyt playing ahead of him every week.
i would keep crouch, because unless rafa is buying a top striker. who else will score other than torres? kuyt, and voronin are crap both should be sold but rafa won.t sell kuyt. owen would be a good buy. but i think rafa does not trust his injuries. for 7/8 mil i would go for owen

The main thing when u play 4-2-3-1 is to have power mid and a good productive winger to support the striker.liverpool have only average winger and this make torres need to react alone so the goal oppurnity slight decrease…

You lot don’t seem to understand, you’re all going on about needing this forward or that forward, you keep classing Kuyt as a low scoring forward, he’s not, he is now a work horse right midfielder (all be it a shit headless chicken)and Rafa loves him. While Rafa insists on playing two holding midfielders he will only play one forward, otherwise Stevie G has to play wide right or wide left, Rafa feels that playing 4-2-3-1 has sorted this problem out and Stevie plays just behind Torres. We could get Ian Rush at his very best and it would only be Torres or Rush, not both! Rafa has got to change his tactics and play Mascherano and Gerrard centre midfield then he could promise Crouch a game and start playing two upfront,then we need one more striker to go with Torres, Crouch and Babel, we do need wide men but come on rizal, Morton Gamst Pedersson is just an aveage player who had a good season with Blackburn a couple of years ago, and Stuart Downing is no where near premiership quality, he only got a game because Boro have had a long succession of crap managers, one of which (McClaren) went on to manage England and had the cheek to pick the useless twat for his country. The best left winger around is Ashley Young at Villa and we’ve no chance of getting him, but Rafa does need to search and bring quality to the club. as for the new stadium 61,000 is not enough, it should be at least 70,000 with the capability of extending by another 10,000 to 15,000. then we could challenge the mancs and piss them off by having the biggest club ground in the country, as we should! I think bennitez approach for taking the 2 unknown player bcoz they actually can give what HE want…Can u imagine how a high profile and class manager can buy an unknown player without a reason…there must be a speciality that can attract the forbidden manager..!! please stop making any noise bcoz of this,because he is always better than we in football.Grrr..
yeah, kuyt is a work horse in the formation of liverpool.but , think again,how can a player who can`t ran fast,poor dribbling and inaccurate pass and poor touch can be a winger.i suggest the best way is to switch sg with kuyt position.sg not suitable playing behind torres because to support the attack we need to generate a power attack.when sg playing a bit higher,the lower position always play a high ball to sg because the generator of attack is always and forever sg.this make the attck become more predictable.i always wanted liverpool to play a simple passer game not long pass game.when kut playing behind the torres we can use the atheletism of kuyt and work rate to support torres.when sg play right,i think it will give more threat to oppenent..besides that gerrard will have much room to launch an attack compared play as second striker..clyde

ManUre can afford to take a 10 million chance on Valencia because they already have a double championship winning team. So if Valencia flops it won’t stop them competing for the league next year. Even if he doesn’t flop they can give him time to develop and still win the title next year.

I agree you can’t trust all the rumours, but unfortunately with Benitez he tends to go after unknown players A LOT so you can guess there is some truth in these rumours. Look at Liverpool’s record in transfer deals in the last 5 years and we buy far too many unknown players who don’t make the grade after a year or two and we have to ship them off again.

You’re right Rouman we have to wait and see. But it won’t be a surprise to any of us at this stage if Benitez buys one player we all know and 3-4 unknown players who turn out to be not good enough.
As regards whiskey nose, he has bought many flops over the years. As has Wenger. God only knows what Wenger ever seen in Frannie Jeffers but a ugly big nose.

The diminutive striker scores goals for fun for Valencia and regularly finds himself at the top of the scoring charts in La Liga. However, he has made it clear he is looking to move to England for a shot at the Premier League. A fee of around £25 million has been doing the rounds, which could be problematic for some of the clubs linked with the 26-year-old Spanish international. Would be a fantastic signing.

These are the type of players we should be looking to sign, not the mickey mouse names that we are being associated with. I think David Villa will be the player Benitez goes for off this list especially if Crouch goes for 15m, Iwould also like us to go after Ben Arfa, who is a real young talent, add Barry and Ramsey and I’d be a happy bunny.
I can see Chelsea spending 100m plus and Man U 50m which puts even more pressure on Benitez to get things right. Arsenal are paying the price for paying there players £40,000 a week by capping there salarys they are shooting themselves in the foot, I wouldnt mind betting that Hleb leaves , which will leave Wenger having to get his cheque book out.

Eddie, with 20m left, you’ll be doing well to sign a really top class winger mate.The porto president announced a month back that any team after Quaresma would have to table ……and wait for it….a basic bid of £40 million and thats just to talk to the player!!!! Thats ludicruous, the last thing you want is to be held to ransom by a greedy president, rememeber the Simao debacle at Benfica and the same with Alves, have we learnt anything with those past experiences? There are good wingers out there, Bentley blows hot and cold i know but has the experience of playing in the premiership, i dont rate Lennon at Spurs, he runs around like a headless chicken, hes the Tony Daly of our generation remember him at Aston Villa??. Frank Ribery is class but Bayern Munich would not want to let him go, he signed last year and recently signed a 4 year deal, so it would be costly to get him.
Aidan McGeady at Celtic, has plenty of potential but is risky, considering the Scottish League isnt exactly setting the world alight, remember the trap we all fell into when Rafa signed Dirk Kuyt, ah hindsight is a great thing i guess!!! Joaquin is class and i wouldnt object to seeing him at Liverpool, hes had an indifferent season at a very inconsistent Valencia team and i think maybe tabling a bid for him, on his day he is a fantastic player, great skill and a good crosser of the ball, maybe its no harm to enquire about him too….

aatir I’m just voicing an opinion, I do’t feel Rafa has what it takes to win us the Premiership, he is too negative in his team selections and his rotation policy costs us dearly. I also question his ability in the transfer market, and his motivational abilities. You say yourself that you are giving him one more season, which to be honest he deserves, but this is his last chance to get things right. As i’ve said before I realise we cannot compete with Man U and Chelsea in the transfer market , but the least we can expect is a Premiership challenge that lasts beyond Christmas.

There is only one common denominator – Rafael Benitez – not good enough.
Owen at 40 years old would contribute more to a title success than Dirk Kuyt, Pennant, Benayoun, Veronin etc.. This is where Benitez is a failure as a manager. He cannot see that workhorse donkeys only get you so far and to win a title you need class players.
If Owen was some Spanish guy who was only 28 and a former European player of the year BENITEZ would buy him without a second’s thought despite Owen’s fitness, which has been fine this season. If Benitez makes excuses for not buying Owen then he is a bitter and stubborn little man we need rid of now.
Benitez cannot allow Owen go to Manure. Utd have their Giggs, Scholes, Nevilles etc.. and Liverpool have Carra and Gerrard, all players brought through the ranks. Owen is Liverpool through and through. He made a mistake leaving; his head was turned by Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo, Carlos, Raul at Madrid after another season of failure at Anfield. But we still need him ahead of the shite strikers we have to play with Torres. For the money we should have the deal already done.

If Owen can be bought for 7m he would be a fantastic player to have at very low cost ( ok I realise his wages would be fairly high), he is in a different league to Voronin and Kuyt when it comes to scoring goals.
It would give everyone at Liverpool a huge lift to see him don the Red shirt yet again. If Benitez fails to see this then he is a fool, imagine Torres getting an injury, who would score the goals ? Voronin and Kuyt to my mind are championship standard players playing in a Premiership side it is even questionable wether they would be prolific in the lower leagues.
Owen is a world class player ,an International player,theres not many forwards in the premiership with his eye for a goal, injury free he could be the difference between us winning the Premier and not doing so, he has a knack of turning 0-0 results into 1-0 victories in a flash. Thats why Benitez needs to go out and buy him.
