A lack of depth at the full-back position apparently forced Roy Hodgson’s hand today, as the manager agreed to a £2.5m with Aston Villa for full-back Luke Young. Whilst Young isn’t the most...
Liverpool beat Chelsea 1-0 at Stamford Bridge today with Xabi Alonso scoring the only goal of the game, watch it here!
Alonso scored after 10 mins, then Liverpool held on for the remaining 80 with Alonso nearly scoring a second after he hit the post with a free kick, but it was his goal that gave Chelsea their first home defeat in 4 years. Check it out:
I found this video earlier of the Liverpool players using the Sky tv crew as targets during their warm down after a Carling cup tie was postponed a couple of seasons ago.
Liverpool’s game against Arsenal was postponed due to poor visibility after a blanket of fog covered Anfield; but that didn’t stop Gerrard and co having a laugh kicking balls at the tv crew, check this out:
Dirk Kuyt has bagged a few goals against Chelsea in his Liverpool career; watch them here!
Torres is out tomorrow, so Rafa will be trusting Kuyt and Keane to bag the goals, and there’s no reason why Liverpool fans shouldn’t either – check out these videos of Dirk scoring against Chelsea!
Robbie Keane insists Liverpool are not intimidated by Chelsea ahead of their Premiership clash.
Chelsea have not lost at home in the league for four years, but Robbie Keane dismissed talk of Liverpool being intimidated by such a record: “We know it will not be easy at Chelsea, because they have this amazing home record and have started the season very well. But that does not mean we will be intimidated by them or anything like that.”
“You have to be confident you can go there and win, you cannot be going into games believing you cannot get the right result.
“Chelsea’s record is great, they have a great squad and we respect them. But if you are not confident going into a game like this then you have no chance.”
Rafael Benitez has confirmed star striker Fernando Torres will miss the clash with Chelsea tomorrow with a hamstring injury.
Torres picked up the injury on international duty, and Rafa Benitezs confirmed Torres has lost his race against time to be fit for the top of the table clash: “We do not have Torres, but I believe we have the fire-power to beat Chelsea,” the Spaniard continued. “We have been playing well and have good confidence.
“We have enough quality in the squad. We may have been more worried without Torres in the past, but we have improved, we have new players with a very good mentality.
“We have enough to beat a very good team, and that is what Chelsea are. It is too early to talk of titles, but we have the confidence to beat anyone. So we will go to Stamford Bridge and try to do our best. If we win it will be perfect and if we do not lose that too will be positive.”
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez is confident he will be offered a new contract soon after revealing he had received positive messages from George Gillett.
Gillett was present at the Vicente Calderon stadium to witness Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, and afterwards he told Rafa he was doing ‘a fantastic job’. Rafa has not yet been offered a new deal, but remains confident a contract will be offered soon: “I have had some contact and some messages, saying congratulations, you are doing a fantastic job, I am thinking about games and do my job as well as I can. But I think the contract will get sorted, yes.”
With Fernando Torres unlikely to be playing against Chelsea, most Liverpool fans will be hoping Robbie Keane can score against the Blues – something he is no stranger to; watch this video of him scoring a screamer last season!
Spurs and Chelsea played one of the games of the season last year, and Robbie Keane scored this beauty for Tottenham:
If he bags another like that then im sure we have nothing to worry about in Torres’ absence.
Robbie Keane has made it 1-0 to Liverpool in Madrid, scoring after 13 minutes after Gerrard set him up.
Gerrard sent a pass through the defence and although replays showed Keane to be just offside, no flag was raised so he calmly put the ball past Leo Franco to make it 1-0.
Rafa Benitez has named his starting line up to face Atletico Madrid, with Dirk Kuyt dropped to the bench.
Kuyt has a habit of scoring in European games, and has popped up to score the winner in the league a few times this year, but today Rafa has opted for Robbie Keane upfront instead.
The team is as follows: Reina, Arbeloa, Dossena, Carragher, Agger, Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard, Riera, Benayoun, Keane. Subs: Cavalieri, Lucas, Babel, Darby, Pennant, Kuyt, Aurelio.
With Fernando Torres out injured for tonight’s game against Atletico Madrid, who do you think should be in the starting line up?
I reckon we have to go for the win, and go for 4-2-3-1 something like this:
Reina,
Arbeloa, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio,
Mascherano Alonso
Kuyt Gerrard Riera
Keane/Babel
What would be your starting line up be?
