Strange steps it may seem, but Liverpool have moved to quash any talk that midfield duo Xabi Alonso & Javier Mascherano will be leaving the club this summer by releasing an official statement on the club’s website.
The statement reads:
“Despite repeated media speculation on the futures of Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano, Liverpool has received no official approach or offer from any club regarding the players.
“Neither is for sale and furthermore Liverpool has no interest in the long list of Spanish based players being linked with a move to Anfield as part of any deal.”
The news will come as a great relief to Reds fans, many of whom had been unsettled by reports this week from Mascherano’s camp that the Argentine would welcome a bid from European Champions Barcelona.
Alonso’s future has long been up for discussion, the Spaniard was reportedly set to leave the club for Juventus last season but Liverpool’s fruitless pursuit of Gareth Barry and the prohibitive price tag placed on Alonso meant he stayed put, and responded in fine style with a stunning campaign. Reports in Spain have consistently linked the 27 year-old with Real Madrid, yet this latest offering from Liverpool should put paid to such speculation.
With regards to the second part of the statement, the report should also quell rumours that striker Alvaro Negredo- a Real player who spent the last two seasons on loan at Almería- will be offered to the club as part of any part exchange deal.
Good news for Reds fans, the spine looks like it is staying put, now for those ancillary places eh?
