Liverpool v Lyon: What went wrong?

After Liverpool lost to Lyon 2-1 last night at Anfield; what do you think went wrong?
Do you think it was the formation, the players, the lack of atmosphere, the injury to Gerrard or was it a combination of all of these things that cost Liverpool the win?
When we have Gerrard and Torres fit, the 4-2-3-1 works wonders in some matches, however when one or both of them are missing I can’t help but wonder why there is no change in tactics? Babel could have come on in place of Gerrard and we could have gone 4-4-2 with either Babel and Ngog or Ngog and Kuyt, rather than sticking with the same formation that obviously wasn’t working too well?
One of the main talking points of any defeat is always Lucas and how he does nothing to shape a game. People say he had a solid match, or how his passing stats are so high, yet when does he do anything other than a simple 4/5 yard pass to Mascherano or our full backs (the majority of the time whn they have a player on their backs). Having read Tim Vickery singing the praises of Lucas by saying:
“He’s an exciting player of a type that Brazilian football hasn’t produced too many of recently. Of late their central midfielders have tended to be ‘holders’ who sit and allow the full-backs to push forward.
Lucas is different. He’s a big, blonde figure whose power and physical strength comes with attacking ability.
He can pass well and loves to rumble forward. He gets on the scoresheet both with blistering shots from range and from bursting beyond the strikers.
You can certainly imagine him playing alongside Javier Mascherano, for example.” You can’t help but feel disappointed when we see time and time again him having little to no impact on a game. When have we seen this physical strength, attacking ability or seen him “rumble foward”? Fans who love to get behind the team no matter what will say “he had a great game against Newcastle where we won 5-1″ but he can’t ride on one game last season for the rest of his career; there’s no way he’d be getting as many games for Arsenal/Chelsea/Manc scum/Villa so why is he a regular in our starting 11?
Few players did well last night so maybe it is a bit harsh to aim criticism at Lucas, but something needs to change and fast, and if we had someone better in that position I have no doubt we’d start winning games.

I think I’ve dissected the game enough in the previous thread started by Russel so I won’t rant much more.
Just one comment about Lucas, maybe it is Rafa telling him NOT to ‘rumble forward’. Xabi was never that offensive in terms of his movement but the difference was, his long-range passing was world class. I suspect Lucas is being told to sit next Macherano and maybe he’s not too happy about that. You know what Rafa is like, if a player strays 10 yards from where he ’should’ be, Rafa is off his seat telling him so.
There was 3 things that went wrong v’s lyon 1. lucas, ngog, voronin, aurelio, kuyt 2. rafa playing players out of position and playing players not good enough as the ones above and 3. is rafa he picks the team he so called trains them he hasnt got a clue and he needs to go what the fcuk was he doing with his hands on the touchline no-one can understand him the sooner he goes the better LFC will be i just WISH dalglish would take over at least til the end of the season, now wouldn’t that give the whole team a lift coz lets be honest here rafa isnt doing it is he?
Just out of curiosity, has anyone heard from rouman or any of the other regulars? They disappeared when we made the switch to the new site. Would love to get them on board over here as well. Cheers
My thoughts excatly russell ive noticed since the change over rouman,criticalmind,eddie888, and the other regulars hasnt been on here where are ya guys especially you rouman????
Right, so I’m throwing out an APB for rouman, criticalmind, eddie888 and anyone else who was around before the change. Come back lads, we miss you all around here!
I did comment on that in the thread about changes to the site. It’s rare that we go for more than a day or 2 without Rouman, T-Bone, otleyred etc posting.
Back on subject.
KEV J, I thought Aurelio had a good game, he even got MOTM in some papers (although I would say Beneyoun).
Do you disagree or is it just that you were baffled when Aurelio was chosen to replace Gerrard, ahead of Spearing or Babel?
Hey rep i was just baffled that aurelio came on 4 gerrard when it should of been spearing who plays in the middle thats the trouble with rafa that pisses me off he never plays players in there right positions i dread to think where he will play aquilani when he’s fit maybe on the left wing and ruin his football like he has done with babel who’s confidence is shot to pieces he wil be gone in jan so will a lot more voronin has to be on that list aswell according to todays papers rafa lost the fans as soon as he replaced our best player (benayoun) with that USELESS long haired turd voronin he should of stayed with hertha berlin the sooner he goes the better coz lets be honest he isnt no where near liverpool quality is he? he’d be lucky to make a championship team first x1 and there a lot of those kinda players with us and they need to be shipped out b4 our season gets even worse than it already is,oh and according to papers that rafa is fearing for his job yipee!!!! sorry guys but we need a change of manager its common sense he doesnt motivate the team at all a new man with fresh ideas is what we need kenny are u reading this!
Quote from Tommy Smith :
……………………………………………………………………….
“It maddens me to see every Liverpool player in our box to defend corners,” he fumed.
“If we left two up it would mean opponents having to keep players back, as used to happen. We’d still have a goalkeeper and eight players to defend things, which for me is plenty and also gives us a chance of picking up the clearances.”
………………………………………………………………………
Liverpool legends make a habit of criticising the current regime and it winds me up a bit but on this occasion, I think he’s spot on!
Apparently we cannot afford to get rid of Benitez !
Sack him in the morning for incompetence and await the outcome of the employment tribunal.
He would need a brilliant employment lawyer to convince anyone he has a case for unfair dismissal.
If not sell Johnson and use the money to pay him off – Kelly looks a much safer bet.
Agree with u there otley id just sack him end of but i wouldnt sell johnson tho he’s a good player gets forward scores goals if we lose on sunday then we need to get a petition going to get him out how can gillett say thats he’s the best manager around ARE WE MISSING SOMETHING HERE or has gillett fallen and hit his head! so it looks like we are stuck with rafa hasn’t got a clue benitez for a while then GUTTED!
I agree Johnson looks great going forward but he has missed any part of defending in his job description – woeful.
Of course the bleeding obvious is to play Kelly and Johnson on the right but you know who won’t move Kuyt.
A petition is due – the silent majority have had enough. Ian Rush says four defeats doesn’t make a sacking – four years of defensive shite does.
Miis out on a top four and the money this year and we are in a bigger mess – action should be take now.
