5 Reasons Why I Love Liverpool Football Club

A list (which will undoubtedly be contested) of 5 reasons why Liverpool fans love their beloved Reds.

5. Anfield

The stadium itself is the epitome of history and the atmosphere within is something that can only be described as electric.

I’ve never been, but I imagine stepping into the grounds is a lot like the first time you walk up the steps inside Wrigley Field; awe-inspiring. Not only this, but the general atmosphere in the stadium is absolutely fantastic and having 45,000 screaming scousers behind you has to be quite literally like having a twelfth man.

I am not looking forward to the move across the street to Stanley Park, but that has been rumoured to be happening for years now, so let’s hope it never does.

4. The Comeback Kids

Whether they’re down 1-0 or 3-0, there’s always a chance for those Reds to shock you with a 90th minute win. You can never really count them out (any Milan fans willing to confirm that for me?) and time and time again, Liverpool just find ways to win matches. It’s ridiculous, really, but to be able to have hope that your team is going to win even when they’re down 3-0 is certainly a great thing when you’re an anxious sports fan.

3. The Small(er) Bandwagon

I live in Toronto, and so the general soccer knowledge of the city is limited to Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United (and to be quite frank, a lot of people probably haven’t realized he’s not there anymore). Now don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of die hard footy fans in the city, but for the most part, everyone’s on a bandwagon supporting whoever’s in form.

Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Milan and Chelsea are the five shirts you’ll generally see people wearing around here, and although teams like Arsenal and Liverpool do have a following, the fact that they haven’t gone on any winning rampages in the past few years (ok Arsenal did, but I’m lumping them in anyways) means that there’s not as many people on the bandwagon.

Of course everyone knows who they are, but from what I’ve seen there are fewer Liverpool supporters around here. It is nice knowing that you’re one of few people who support the club that nobody here really wants to win.

2. Europe

Year in and year out you can always count on Liverpool to cruise into (ok so ‘cruise’ isn’t the best word considering the scares they always give me in the group stage…let’s go with “qualify forâ€Â) the knockout phases of the Champions League. Over the past few years, they have been, statistically, the most successful team in Europe and I cannot remember the last time too many years passed before they made the quarterfinal.

1. Steven Gerrard

Super Stevie to the rescue! What is there not to love about him? He mans the midfield, he can play as a striker, he always saves the day and he has a gorgeous WAG at his side. Oh, and he’ll even fight you if you’re not careful (See: Stupid DJ’s who don’t play my song).

Every time they’re down it’s like he goes into that phone booth, spins around a few times, and out pops Super Stevie to save the day. If you’re a Liverpool fan, there’s no way you don’t love him, and if you’re a Manchester United fan, there’s no way you cannot respect him. Steven Gerrard is Liverpool. Period.

In Sunday’s Telegraph there was an article about our current injury situation and how much strife we are in because of it. Next to it was an article about Capello looking towards the future for England and at players like Wilshere in particular. This is where the Redmen (through Benitez), and clubs like Arsenal are worlds apart. Eddie, CriticalMind, Rouman, Kev and I wrtite this so often – `I am sure we have the talent like Wilshere but they (Nemeth, Pach etc) will be locked away in meaningless games in Ireland, at Partick Thistle etc, etc when we are crying out for Benitez to give them the same chance as Wenger has given to Wilshere and Walcott etc at Arsenal’. I’m sorry to say it but I have a bad feeling about our visit to White Hart Lane. We have no pre season form (OK I know it’s not that important, but it is a morale booster for the players.). Anyone else share my concerns and frustration?

  • Anonymous

I think Rafa has taken us as far as he can.

  • KEV J

I share ur concerns more than anyone bud we couldnt of had a tougher start than spurs i like u think we have had a rubbish pre-season ok its not important but like u george i agree its about getting fit and more important a morale booster for the players im more worried about what defence rafa will put out on sunday? stevie g pulled out of the england squad today but dont worry he’ll be fit 4 sunday ill bet that but to have a friendly even b4 the season KO is utter MADNESS! another thing george i like to bring up is why hasnt rafa signed another striker yet??? he just doesnt make sense AT ALL does he? unless i hope he puts either nemeth or pacheco as our bk up striker on the bench on sunday they deserve it more,if i had a pound 4 everytime ive said this id be a millionaire! lol! another question 4 u george and the usual suspects on here does anyone think rafa will be LFC manager next season if we dont win the PL this season,im beggining to think he’s taken us as far as he can???????

  • T-Bone

Guys, everyone is concerned about how we may start the season. At one stage we were flying last season then we had 5/6 weeks of dip in form and Man U caught up and we were also risking 2nd place to Chelsea. You must also take something else into consideration: Rafa has had the toughest time in convincing Top Brass that funds are needed to have a quality team. This summer he had bagged in around Euro 4.5 million more than he spent, and I somehow feel another promise has been broken and he was not given the promised funds for the transfer kitty.
The fact that he has not as yet bought another strikers falls on two reasons, either he is going to use one of the lads we have as back up, or else he has a target which could not come this summer, for one reason or another!
There will be many managers under pressure this year, Rafa might be one of them. Saying he has taken us as far as he can is somewhat unfair because this is still works in progress. For example, the academy and youth sector has been totally revamped this summer. People mention Wiltshire and Gibbs…I remind people that last season Rafa deployed Lucas (21), Insua (20), Ngog (21) and many others, so it would not be fair to say he does not utilise our young talent. It could be that our youth insertions do not resound as much as those of Arsenal, and that’s maybe because Wenger is now famous for it. Guys we only know what people want us to know, and we never know the full works. Let’s brace ourselves and give our support.

  • T-Bone

The 18-year old striker Pacheco has renewed his contract by another 3 years. God Bless Him! Aquilani should be officially presented thursday!

  • KEV J

Thats good news that pacheco has signed 4 another 3 yrs does this mean he may get his chance in the first team? what i dont get is that the likes of pacheco, spearing, eccelstone has signed new deals why hasnt the same happened with nemeth? strange one that.

Does anyone know what squad number aquilani will have next season? anyone heard any news on anymore signings coming in?

I live in California, and I have to keep up with my Football through the internet and 5 second clips on the sports channels. I love it (and hate it at times) because there is literally no problem with bandwagoning. No one knows anything about football around here. So I say cheers to you for bringing that little bit up.

    1. Quality

    2. Quality

    3. Quality

    4 Quality

    5 Quality

Liverpool is quality and I don’t mean the players but just the club. QUALITY….

  • Anonymous

Quality does not win us the league

My son is twenty this year and thats’s all he says
‘How come if we are supposedly the best EPL team, that we cannot win the league trophy’
We have won nothing for three years (after a lucky victory when the gods smiled on us)
I think if Rafa does not come up with the goods this season it will be bye bye Rafa
The fans will turn on him instead of Gillette and Hicks ( I hope not)
I can see more Man Utd,Arsenal and Chelsea shirts around here, where it used to be the Reds

Come on Rafa sort it out- try the kids- Aqualini panick buy? He is always injured and averages 15 games per regular season

  • T-Bone

Quality in the game of football is the last ingredient for a winning combination. It is what gives you a notch or two above the rest.
First of all a clarification about Aquilani because I feel many people are throwing in opinions without knowing the facts! Aquilani is an AC Roma academy bred attacking midfielder. He was captain of the U-19 and U-21 national sides which both won the European Championship. Like many of our promising young lads, he found difficulty to break into the first 11 because of a star studded AC Roma side, the side which won the Scudetto after so many years, under the guidance of Fabio Capello who also was the man that broke him into the seria A first team. He is NOT always injured. He had a niggling ankle injury which ultimately required surgery. These are the facts!
With regards to the EPL then that is another story and too complicated to put the blame entirely on Rafa. And it would not be fair either. I am sure we all have a huge list of immediate replacements that will guarantee success if he leaves, don’t we? Guys, under the circumstance (as we know them) we are lucky enough to have spent the money we managed to make from the sale of our ex-players!
One thing’s for sure. Rafa was promised something, and it seems that once again these promises have not been maintained. I have the feel that if things go wrong he might even leave himself…..and perhaps even prematurely!
I reiterate that the best chance we’ve had to win the EPL was last season and I am not as confident as the many who proclaim this is our year. The Gods will have to smile on us again if we are to be successful. We have a lot of quality at Liverpool, was we needed were quality subs!

  • Anonymous

    T Bone
    I disagree
You say Aquilani is not always injured
What? he is always injured, how can you justify your comments with ‘he had a niggling injury’That is a load of Gunk
His appearance record speaks for itself and if Rafa gets it wrong them he will maybe come under some fire from the fans

    Received £30 million for Alonso
Spent £9 mill on Johnson- (Portsmouth owed the rest from the Crouch deal)
£20 on Aquilani (YES still out injured)

We have made £1mill this close season

We cannot expect to do better than last season
    No way
we will be lucky if Man City don’t take our spot in the top four

  • REAPER

hey mate aquilani is gonna be number 4 apparently

  • REAPER

that means we still dont have a number 7 !! which is a bit disappointing since its a legendary number,so rafa buy someone worthy of it and put a smile back on mine and kevj s face !! (david villa )

    George
    Nice cry in
‘I’m sorry to say it but I have a bad feeling about our visit to White Hart Lane’

  • Stevie_theking

Five reasons why Liverpool is the best.

    1. Steve Gerrard
    2. Bill Shankly
    3. Bob Paisley
    4. Passion
    5. Supporters

As regards the title contention I think we ve got it. It s not only which players come in and go its ultimately the football that matters and we are the only team which plays like a team, who has the passion and the strife to get the glory back to abode of the Premiership.

Our lads have the hunger in them. It s important that the players are aware of the rich history that LFC has to be able to play 100% and im sure they are inclined towards the same!!!!!!!!!

    Awaiting Glory!
    Siempre Es Possible Rafa!
    YNWA

  • KEV J

We think a like i want david villa to fill the no7 shirt aswell then id have a permanant smile on my face! but how likely is that? we have more chance of the titanic getting pulled from the sea bed! i dunno about u reaper but i cant see us matching last years performance i maybe wrong which i hope iam but we’ll see we need the perfect start of 3 pts on sunday im hoping the likes of nemeth and pacheco are on the bench seeing as dani signed a new 3 yr deal yesterday c’mon the pool push whiskey breath all the way and hope we beat them again home and away!

  • T-Bone

Seems like Cattermole is having a medical up at Sunderland. That should put the many sceptics’ mind at rest. Kev J as you say number 7 is still up for grabs, unless it’s give to Aquilani!

  • Anonymous

it makes me laugh when people stick up for rafa benitez. he is not a good manager, coach or tactician. he needs to move on and make way for a more dynamic and positive boss. hes holding us back, we will never be the top team while hes at the helm

  • T-Bone

It makes ME laugh when people like you, dear friend, make such a ridiculous statement. I am not supporting him here, but I do have a couple of questions to pick from your genius: a) would you have someone in mind to replace him objectively, and I mean someone that won’t leave his current engagement to come to us, b) Real, Barca, Inter, Milan, Juventus and a host of top European Clubs would welcome Rafa with open arms if he was to leave LFC (you will see when the time comes). You are being highly unfair.

  • REAPER

hey mates,i too am a bit nervous about the start of season especially as 1 of our 2 decent signings is out 2 month !! if he were fit and we had brought another big attacking signing in who scores goals i would be much happier …….. wot youz think

  • T-Bone

I guess we are all nervous but what we really have to do now is damage limitation. On a positive note Lucas has had a good pre-season and seems on form, which under the circumstances will be a plus.
We won’t be as bad as we are being lead to believe. I too would have wanted another top quality striker, but I am sure there are contigency plans. Friends, if the lads we have give their heart and soul for the cause, we won’t do bad.

  • otleyred

T Bone – I would welcome a disppassionate debate on the merits of Snr Benitez and we should question any blind loyalty to the manager because he is the manager.
We won the Champions League in 2005 when only two of the squad were Benitez signings – Alonso and Garcia.
After that we won the FA Cup on a penalty shoot after SG saved us in the last minute against a relegation threatened West Ham Utd.
Progress since then has been absolutely zero based on the Shankly statement – you get nothing for coming second. ( or fourth )
We have seen in excess of 20 players come and go creating absolutely no stability whatsoever.
Your comment that all of the Euro top clubs would be lining up to sign Benitez on as manager is true and therein lies the big issue.
His reputation in Europe is second to none – Scousers want the Title back.
I doubt if Chelsea, Arsenal or the other shower would consider Benitez as their manager.
If you want options for a replacement – the man is sitting in the wings already.
Some have never been convinced – an old scallywag said on the bus heading back to Taksem Sq – he is either the best manager we have ever had or the luckiest.
European consistency or the title – let’s be honest – that seems to be the choice under Benitez.

  • T-Bone

I agree with what you are saying. My comments where towards that supporter that said he is no good, as a coach, manager or tactician. That was my point. With regards to results, the comings and goings of players, I agree 100%. No question asked.
Shankly was a wise man, so was Enzo Ferrari, ‘second is the first of the losers’! I agree that Chelsea and Arsenal would not consider him, but not for techincal reasons, more for having ‘been’ a Liverpool manager.
It’s not just the scousers that want the title back friend, it’s every living supporter on this planet.
With regards to the replacement option sitting in the wings I was thinking if you were referring to Sammy Lee…or King Kenny!
Dispassionately, if he does land the title this year, all this talk will be forgotten, right? ;-)

  • otleyred

Kenny of course – and I would think with passionate and committed right hand man – Aldridge, McMahon for example this would bring the glory days back.
Given the pre season to date this season has to be a concern – in terms of the title of course it would be forgotten – that’s football.
But do you think he could bring it home “regularly” – I think if we won it under Benitez it would more liklely to be a “one off”.
Not sure about the word “loser” – second of the first or anywhere for that matter.
Good to have a debate without emotional baggage / blame the Yanks / Uncle Tom Cobbley and all – this will be Benitez’s judgement season and so it should be.
When he arrived we had two new signings of his – now the entire backroom staff, squad etc are Benitez choices – we only have two players left from 2004/5 Carra and SG – there is no hiding place for RB this season.

We should buy Negredo! If he’s considering going to Hull he’ll definately come to us, right?

  • REAPER

buy david villa drop gerrard back to cm…….. its that simple

  • KEV J

According to the eurosport blogger page hull are on the verge of sign alvaro negredo! WTF!!! there is another player rafa is to fcuking slow to get!!! all of a sudden the likes of hull have more fcuking money than us! WHAT A FCUKING JOKE!!!!!!!! why havent we signed a striker yet! where is the 10m change from alonso??????? into the fcuking yanks pockets!!! and where is the money from gillett selling his ice hockey team LFC hasnt seen any of that money and thats around 250m??????????????????????????????????????????????????

  • T-Bone

Kev J….calm down mate! Negredo was split between AC Roma and Hull. He wants to play Premier League football, but it seems Rafa does not want to buy from Real, or else the change, which is Euro 4.5 million approx was not made available for the transfer market. It’s a question of seeing if he is better than what we have in house! I repeat, I feel Rafa had only one lad in mind, and that DAVID VILLA! One day we WILL find out why David Villa is not playing for us this season…….

  • T-Bone

To all the USUAL SUSPECTS! He has been presented officially, any idea what number he will be wearing???? If no number was announced is it possible we could be in for a last minute……SURPRISE?

  • T-Bone

Rafa has said ‘more money has to be spent on another forward as soon as possible….something IS brewing…!

  • KEV J

If u go onto the liverpoolfc.tv website you will see what aquilani new number is for next season its an ex legends number he has been given.

  • T-Bone

Been there a few times but I missed it. Thanks. Still means we have a number 7 up for grabs, right???

  • KEV J

Your right about the no7 still up 4 grabs but the question us reds fans wants 2 know will it be filled this season? id love 4 it 2 be david villa id have a permanant smile on me face but that doesnt look likely does it?????

The only thing i can think of is that maybe rafa will save what if any money he has left and use the money in january 4 a striker and maybe use nemeth and pacheco 4 now but we just dont know coz we dont get told anything???

  • KEV J

Ive just come off the football rumours website and there is lots of storys about our number 7 shirt still not bein filled and who will be wearing it this season there is all sorts go and have a butchers, there is even talk of beckham, david villa even kuyt having the no7 shirt and even james milner!and VDV there is all sorts of rumours the only story i wanna see be true is that the no7 shirt will be worn by david villa end of so c’mon rafa go and see those scrooge bastard yanks and get some more wonga off them.

  • Anonymous

If no Prem title this season = Rafa goes

I think everyone feels the same on here

If Kuyt or Torres get injured we are doomed

  • T-Bone

I would not be as harsh as that, even though it’s what we are after. If Rafa brings in a major honour, even the FA Cup, he will get some reprieve. He is not the only manager on this line. In my view there are only three managers in the Premier League that are untouchable. SAF, Ancelotti and Wenger. Rafa has a strong stake in the Club now and the only real problems he can have is if he forces the hand of the Yanks, otherwise he rules, like it or not.
It’s going to be a hard season and in a shorter time because of the World Cup. Liverpool will go for all competitions but the with size of squad we have and the quality of the replacements, and at time their inexperience, this might prove a rough ride. There is a standard starting eleven, and maybe a handful of quality replacements. Whoever gets injured will be a serious blow to any of our aspirations.
