Bad start for Liverpool and Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers felt harshly treated by referee Phil Dowd after seeing Liverpool crash to a 3-0 defeat at West Brom on the opening day of the Barclays Premier League .

Dowd awarded two second-half penalties, the first of which also saw Daniel Agger red-carded and the second awarded for Martin Skrtel’s foul on Long which was tucked away by Peter Odemwingie.

Fans may be looking for one of the best bookies if they still think Liverpool will make the top four, as this opening day result will surely improve their odds.

Rodgers told a post-match press conference
“I thought the scoreline was harsh, I’ve got to be honest.

“After the first couple of minutes of the game, we got good control and rhythm in our game. Up until they scored the first goal, it looked as though we were the team who were going to get it.

“I’ve no complaints about the first goal – it was a fantastic strike (by Gera). We defended the (initial) corner quite well with good height and distance on our clearance. Glen Johnson probably couldn’t have done any more as he went to press the ball, but it was wonderful technique.

“We were virtually controlling most of the game in the first half, but then we found ourselves 1-0 down.

“I’m not one to go on about referees, but in the second half I thought the two (penalty) decisions – three if you include the sending off – were very, very harsh. I don’t think either of the decisions were penalties. If you see them again on the replay, you’ll see that they were very, very harsh.

“Obviously then with 10 men and chasing the game, it becomes difficult.”

Liverpool certainly showed some encouraging signs in the opening 45 minutes. New Signing Allen had a really good game and I feel with a couple of more quality additions Liverpool have got every chance of finishing in the top four. It just shows we still need a clinical finisher and a proven winger.

i had my doubts about the owners, there inexperience about liverpool fc.. there choices they have made, its only one game i know but for us to compete we need top players.that means money . i still think they were wrong not to give kenny another year, i think he would of done ok this year and got 4th. its ok saying its a long term plan but can you afford it if were in the bottom 4 ? or mid table ? you need success to breed success. that means quality players i hope brendon does well he seems a nice guy, but is that enough ? he is still new to the game as being in charge of a top club.. iam not in a panic (yet) i know its early days but when they got rid of kenny we allexpected a experienced manager , youth is ok if your swansea wigan etc not liverpool we needed a proven winner, not one that plays nice football, but wins nothink….i said before we got brendon the owners made this choice if it goes wrong, will they sell up ?…. they said he will get time…what happens if were in bottom 4 ? will they still say that…. iam not so sure… we all want the best for liverpool but since moores sold up its never been the same… sure the games about money now and thease owners saved us from the last lot of rubbish. but are the new owners really going to move us on?….i have my doubts…
