Epic game settled by Bellamy who leads Liverpool into League Cup final
Craig Bellamy once again starred for Liverpool as they booked their place in the League Cup final with a 2-2 draw against Manchester City. This resulted in Liverpool winning the semi-final 3-2 on aggregate.
Liverpool were the dominant team in the second leg of the semi-final and if it wasn’t for the heroics of Joe Hart Liverpool could quiet easily run away with the game.
But it was Manchester City who opened the scoring in the 31st minute against the run of play when Nigel De Jong looked to have slipped when he struck a great shot from distance, but the ball curved past Pepe Reina. This goal did nothing to dampen Liverpool’s spirits. 10 minutes later Liverpool were rewarded with a penalty after Micah Richards was judged to have handled the ball in the box after Daniel Agger’s shot bounced up off Richard’s leg and struck his arm. Steven Gerrard stepped up confidently and put the penalty away to give Liverpool the advantage going in to the second half.
City made some tactical changes at half time and took off inexperienced defender Savic and replaced him with the attacking Sergio Aguero.
City again scored against the run of play when Kolarov attacked down the left and put in a superb cross which Dzeko was able to tap into the far post. At this point City had only managed two shots on target, but had two goals to show for it.
Anfield erupted in the 74th minute when Liverpool were able to put themselves in front on aggregate when Bellamy was able to put the ball past Hart when he was able to find space in the box after a one-two with Glen Johnson. What a signing Craig Bellamy has been this season.
The last 15 minutes were quiet nervy for Liverpool as City gave everything they had to find another goal. Liverpool did well to hold possession and run the clock down and were worthy winners in the end. Steven Gerrard is now set to lead Liverpool into a Wembley Final for the first time on February 26th.
