LFC Injury news – Maxi, Johnson, Carroll, Shelvey and Spearing

Kenny Dalglish has today confirmed why Maxi Rodriguez, Glen Johnson and Andy Carroll missed the game against Aston Villa, and also gave an update on Shelvey and Spearing.

Carroll played against Spurs last week, but he was missing from the squad today, something Kenny was keen to clear up: “Andy’s not been able to sustain any reasonable time in training and it would have been irresponsible of us to bring him.

“We played him last week, but it was unfair on him that we did ask him to play. I didn’t think we should risk the boy’s fitness by bringing him. Although we’ve not got any games, it’s important they’re all back fit in July.

“It’s the same with Glen, who had a problem with his hamstring, so we left him up there. Maxi had a problem with his adductor, so it’s better to miss this game than pre-season training.

“I don’t think any of them will need surgery.”

Dalglish also spoke about Jay Spearing, who was replaced by Jonjo Shelvey in the Villa game: “There were players who played who probably shouldn’t have, Jonjo Shelvey should not have played more than 20-25 minutes, so I think his knee will be a bit painful in the morning and young Jay’s ankle will certainly be a bit painful in the morning.

“But you get to this stage of the season and I am sure a lot of people would say that. Jonjo might be the biggest problem for the summer and wee Jay. They’ve got scans tomorrow to see what their problems are.

“Soto was injured as well, so maybe the end of the season has come at the right time for us – I might have been in next week!”
