Liverpool rest senior stars for Europa clash

The reds have left a host of senior stars behind for their Europa League Group A tie with Young Boys in Bern.

Skipper Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Jose Reina, Glen Johnson, Martin Skrtel, Daniel Agger, Joe Allen and Martin Kelly are some of the first team regulars who remains on Merseyside.

Youngsters Samed Yesil, Suso, Andre Wisdom, Conor Coady, Adam Morgan, Jack Robinson and Dani Pacheco have all been included in the squad.

Provisional squad: Jones, Wisdom, Carragher, Coates, Enrique, Shelvey, Sahin, Henderson, Downing, Yesil, Morgan, Gulacsi, Robinson, Coady, Suso, Sterling, Pacheco, Assaidi.

Personally I think it’s great that Rodgers is gonna give some of these young lads a chance this season, especially with the big game against Manchester United this weekend.

What does everyone else think about his decision?

I completely support it. We have United on Sunday. By the time the players fly home and get to bed tonight, the United game will be kicking off in less than 2.5 days with all the additional tiredness from travel. This is the first game of six in the Europa League. A point would not be too bad in any case. If this squad go away from home in Europe, playing for the first team and get a result, they will be buzzing. If the best 11 went out and lost, the staff would be spending all their time lifting their spirits for Sunday. Every way I look at this, the decision is right – for the short-term approach to what is THE showcase game of the season at the weekend, and the long-term approach to giving opportunities to the players who can become the future of the club.

A great result for our club. I’m wondering when was the last time we scored five away, if ever in Europe? BR took a big gamble and it has paid off, so now let’s hope (and I think they will) the lads who face the mancs on Sunday will do their bit. Enrique seesm to be getting stick for his performance last night. What’s happened to him ffs. I thought he was one of KK’s best buys but now he seems a liability – one which BR won’t waste much more time on I’m fairly sure. I would think BR will play Johnson at left back again on Sunday, but for me Glen is not able to provide a fluid service down the left. It’s clearly not his preferred foot although he has scored some good left footed goals. He needs to check his runs down the left and transfer the ball to his right foot more oiften than not, thus halting our momentum. If Robinson is fit, I would give the slot to him.
