Pepe Reina – 6.0
The Liverpool keeper didn’t have to do much in the game but he was unlucky in the 57th minute when Frazier Campbell’s shot ricocheted off the left post and fell to the feet of Bendtner .The stand-in skipper will know he should have done better.
Martin Kelly 5.5
Unlike the player he had to mark, he was lacking in confidence and did not make challenges when necessary was struggling to contain James McClean and offered little going forward.
Martin Skrtel – 6
His failure to stop Fraizer Campbell proved costly as Sunderland took the lead. Not one of his best performance this season.Looked really uncomfortable at the back along with Coates.
Sebastien Coates – 5
Was often nervous with the ball when under pressure and he did not track Bendtner allowing the Dane to score Sunderland’s first goal.
Jose Enrique – 6.5
The former Newcastle left-back shrugged off the boo-boys to produce a neat and tidy display. His runs down the left were often with intent and drive but they were one-dimensional and lacked creativity.
Jay Spearing – 6.5
Made a couple of surging runs that was a surprise given how he’s usually so defensive-minded. Shielded his defense with plenty of purpose. A decent outing for the anchorman
Jordan Henderson (off 79′) – 6.0
The ex-Sunderland player was warmly welcomed to his old home and he ran often and swiftly down the right but he failed to provide any good crosses to Suarez or Kuyt.
Charlie Adam (off 69′) – 6
There was plenty of perspiration but not enough inspiration from the Scot who failed to capitalize on plenty of possession and was hauled off midway through the second half. His corners were always cleared away and he really needs to improve his delivery of set pieces if he’s adamant about taking so many of them.
Dirk Kuyt – 6
He was a bit of a threat with his heading but never really threatened the Sunderland keeper. Worked his socks off but did not have enough guile to break down the Sunderland defense
Craig Bellamy (off 69′) – 5.5
He started brightly but faded badly and looked increasingly peripheral when he went off midway through the second half. Often passed too early to Suarez and camped in the penalty box hoping for a favorable pass and when frustrated, he often went in hard on the Sunderland players.
Luis Suarez – 6
Our only attacking spark. Tried hard but never had any support. His dribbling was often simple and Suarez was easily challenged by the Sunderland players.
Steven Gerrard – 6.0 (on 69′)
Liverpool were beyond saving even when their savior entered the fray. Tried a shot from distance but instead of the frightening thunderbolts that he is well-known for, Gerrard produced soft-hearted attempts that gave Mignolet no shocks.
Stewart Downing – 5
The winger hardly had the chance to get going.
Andy Carroll – 5.5 (on 69′)
He was able to use his height well for once and often headed the ball down to Liverpool players. But it was much too little and much too late.
So overall it was a very poor outing for the reds and the team really showed no heart. I believe there’s alot of younger players in the reserves who should be given a run in the first team as the season draws to a close. At least they will go out and give their all for the shirt.
