Tottenham vs Liverpool – Important matchups and pre-match report
Liverpool – Spurs Pre-Match Report
Liverpool face Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Sunday in an early-season crunch match. Both teams are in the midst of somewhat disappointing starts to the season, and both could do with a win in London.
History:
Total Matchups: 159
Liverpool Wins: 73
Tottenham Wins: 47
Draws: 39
Form:
Liverpool: The Reds are coming off a tough away defeat to Stoke last weekend. For a team with title aspirations, losing against a typically middling team cannot be accepted. The will be looking to bounce back big time against Spurs. Other than that, Liverpool looked strong in their previous two matches, playing good football and recording 2-0 and 3-1 victories over Arsenal and Bolton respectively. They sit at sixth in the table.
Tottenham: Harry Redknapp’s men have only played three games after riots postponed their opener, and they have only managed to take three points. They lost by a total of 8 goals to 1 in their opening two matches against the Manchester duo. That said, they looked strong in the matchup against Wolves last weekend and never looked threatened in a 2-0 away win. They are 15th in the league table.
Key Players:
Liverpool: Luis Suarez is obviously the talisman for the Reds. He will once again be relied upon to be the offensive force moving forward. Daniel Agger will need to be on top off his game to stop the strong Tottenham attack. Lucas will also play a big role for the Reds, likely man-marking one of the opposition’s many creative midfielders.
Tottenham: Much like Suarez with the Anfield club, Luka Modric makes the Spurs’ attack tick. Everything revolves around him in the centre of the field. Niko Krancjar and Gareth Bale are the main threats, however, as they will look to expose Liverpool’s defense down the wing. Emmanuel Adebayor is the point striker, and the target man for the speedy Spurs wingers.
Injury News:
Liverpool: Steven Gerrard may be ready to return for the Reds after returning to training. He may not be on the pitch from the onset, but theres still a chance he could make Kenny Dalglish’s squad, even tho it is more likely he will be given another week. Glen Johnson’s injury woes continue. He’ll be out. Martin Kelly looks set to return after being out against Stoke. If he is missing, Martin Skrtel or John Flanagan will take his place at right back.
Tottenham: Tottenham’s physio room is full at the moment. The biggest loss could be midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart if he hasn’t recovered from his hamstring injury. Key defenders Michael Dawson and William Gallas will also be out of the lineup for Tottenham. They are scrambling to fill defensive spots. Finally, Aaron Lennon and Steven Pienaar will be missing, both out with groin injuries.
Important Battles:
Lucas vs Luka Modric: This will be the most important matchup of the game. If he plays well, Luka Modric can run a game. If he is quieted down, the Spurs team goes with him. Lucas has developed into a key player for Liverpool, and he will be heavily relied upon to keep Luka Modric at bay.
Daniel Agger vs Emmanuel Adebayor: The battle of the big boys. They both stand at 6’3″, and weigh in at an average of 81 kg. Watching them lock horns should be great to watch. Tottenham will target Adebayor aerially, and if Agger can keep him away from the goal Liverpool should be safe.
Luis Suarez vs Ledley King: Regardless of what formation the Reds play, Suarez is their guy. He is the man who will be the force offensively. It will be up to Ledley King to shut him down. If he allows Suarez to run rampant like he has in the past few games, the results will be devastating for Tottenham.
Bet365 Odds:
Liverpool: 13/8
Tottenham: 13/8
Draw: 12/5
Preview:
The bookies are giving nothing away for this game. That said, Liverpool must be the favourites. They’ll come out hungry after a disappointing defeat, and if they can gain an upper hand early they can make the game theirs. Tottenham need to defend well despite their injuries, and need to find an alternative way to score beside Adebayor and Modric. Shutting down Luis Suarez will be the key if a home victory is wanted. Liverpool vs Tottenham never disappoints with fans likely to scamble to get these football tickets.
Prediction:
Tottenham 1:2 Liverpool
